Ike! #
Hurricane Ike draws ever nearer to Texas, and it looks like it is coming straight to us. Angleton is now under mandatory evacuation orders. Please follow the instructions of the Emergency Management Teams to keep yourself safe!
Holy Comforter's hurricane team will return to Angleton as soon as the storm abates to survey damage. Call 979-549-7440 on Sunday if you have questions about the condition of your property. If cell phones are working, we will do our best to answer your questions.
Holy Comforter Church and School are closed today, Thursday, and Friday, September 11 & 12. We anticipate the likely cancellation of church services on Sunday, September 14; however, check back here for an update.
May the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus...even in the midst of Hurricane Ike!

Neither Red Nor Blue.... #
Selecting good leaders is critical at every level, even for the local parish! At Holy Comforter, we will be electing new leaders on Sunday, October 19. The vestry nominating committee has nominated a full slate of people who have agreed to serve if elected; see the list below. We are grateful for their willingness to serve Holy Comforter Episcopal Church!
Additional nominations are being accepted as well. "Expectations" forms for each leadership area are available in the Narthex. For a nominee to be received, a signed "Expectations" form must be submitted to the church office by September 20. Photographs and bios of each nominee will be in the October newsletter so that we can be well prepared to vote on October 19.
The vestry nominating committee has nominated the following people: For three 3 years terms: Chip Cole, Jerry Powell, and Lori Hawkins. For one 1 year (uncompleted) term, Barbara Thomas. For Diocesan Council delegate, Ed White; for Alternate, Mike Hattaway. For one three year term on the Endowment Board: Ron Briscoe. Watch for their information, along with any additional nominees, in the October newsletter!

Labor Day Sunday #
Sunday, August 31 is Labor Day Sunday, the perfect time to consider our labor. Everyone is invited to bring a symbol of their work to place on the altar this Sunday, at either service, as we offer our work to God as a gift and ask God's blessing on our endeavors.

Back-to-school... #
It's that time again and, as always, Holy Comforter Episcopal Church wants to get our many educators (teachers, counselors, administration, staff, Sunday School teachers) off to a great start! We will bless our educators at both services on Sunday, August 24. Following the 10:30 service, we'll celebrate with water games for the children and a hot dog picnic for everybody! Food & drinks are provided, just pack up your children's swimsuits and towel and join in the fun! See you there!

We are thrilled to announce that Holy Comforter Episcopal School has received its official Letter of Accreditation from the Southwestern Association of Episcopal Schools (SAES)! Green Church #
Like Kermit the frog sings: it isn't easy being green! But actually, it's not all that difficult either. Holy Comforter is committed to improving our stewardship of God's creation! We are no longer buying styrofoam cups or plates; you may have noticed our eco-friendly sugar-cane plates and compostable hot/cold cups.
You can help us be better stewards by recycling; we have a recycle bin in the office, as well as two in the parish hall. Check out our monthly Green Tip in the newsletter, and pick up one of the green shopping bags available courtesy of our Diocese. If we each do our part, we can make a difference!

Good News for Early Birds! #
On Sunday, June 1, Holy Comforter Angleton adds an early worship service to our Sunday schedule! The new 8:30 a.m. service will be a simpler, more intimate worship service than the 10:30 service. This "Rite 3" service will incorporate worship forms from Enriching Our Worship, a supplement to the Book of Common Prayer. Nursery will be available from 8:15 a.m. Now you have a choice on Sunday morning: 8:30 or 10:30....or both!

Pentecost! #
Suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind....all of them were filled with the Holy Spirit! Acts 2:2&4
Celebrate Pentecost on Sunday, May 11 at Holy Comforter! Our special guest, Kathy Culmer, storyteller extraordinaire, will bring the Pentecost story to life for us at the 10:30 worship service. After worship we'll share a Pentecost Potluck as we each bring a dish representing our own (or another) ethnic origin. Wear your Holy Spirit red and celebrate God's gift to all the nations!

Who is Our Neighbor? #
Holy Comforter Angleton's new neighbors are the children of the West Texas polygamist compound. Twenty five of these children and ten mothers have been received by Kidz Harbor, a foster care facility near Liverpool, Texas, only 15 miles from Angleton. Kidz Harbor is in need of immediate donations to help with the assimiliation of these children. Donations may be brought to Holy Comforter; Outreach Coordinator Dianne Kilgus will deliver them to Liverpool.
Items needed are: Money (the greatest need), baby care items, such as diapers and wipes, and personal hygiene items, such as toothpaste, shampoo, etc. Additionally, these children--our neighbors--need our prayers. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Matthew 22:39

Legacy of Leadership Class #
The Diocese of Texas will soon be electing a Bishop Coadjutor (that's Episco-speak for Bishop-elect)! Holy Comforter wants to be in the know, so during Adult Christian Ed at 9:30 on Sundays, April 14, 21, 27, & May 4, we'll use the curriculum Legacy of Leadership to take a look at the election process. We'll study what the Bible says about leadership and learn about the role of Diocesan Bishop. If you want to better understand our polity and process, this is the class for you! Click on the link to the Diocese of Texas www.epicenter.org for more information about nominees and the election process.
