All Saints Sunday, Nov. 2 #

This Sunday, All Saints Sunday, we will remember the saints who have gone before us.   If you have a loved one who has died in the past year, we would be honored to remember them by name and with the tolling of the bell.   Please contact the church with their name and yours, plus your contact information.  Loved ones will be remembered at both services.  Those who have died in past years will be remembered with a time of silence and the tolling of the bell.  In celebration of the continuity of life, we will joyfully baptize baby Emily Peck into the community of faith at the 10:30 a.m. service. It will be a wonderful Sunday for all God's saints!  We hope to see you there!

Holy Comfort for Hurricane Victims #

The Vestry of Holy Comforter has committed our entire "open plate" Sunday offerings through 2008 to the Diocese of Texas Hurricane Fund.  The total collected will be matched in January 2009 by the HC Endowment Fund.  Its a wonderful opportunity to do our part to ease the pain of Ike, while remaining faithful in our own giving to Holy Comforter!

Recovery continues... #

Angleton continues its storm recovery work.  Ike was hard on all of us, no matter how much (or how little) damage we sustained.   Please be gentle with yourself as you deal with the emotional after-effects of this traumatic event.

We are gathering an offering for the Diocese of Texas Hurricane Fund; contributions will be received through next Sunday, the 28th.   Additionally, we are assembling a team of recovery workers who can respond to a clean-up call when the most damaged areas are re-opened.  Please call Holy Comforter if you can be on the recovery team!

Amidst the challenges of these weeks, we have a bright spot!  Our photo directories have finally arrived!   They are available for pick up on Sunday or during the week!

Sunday Celebration! #

Join us Sunday, September 21, between services (at 9:30) for a fellowship breakfast and celebration! Our parishioners are safe, our church is safe, school is resuming...we have so much to celebrate!  Call Deborah White to see what you can bring to the breakfast!

Because of continued Ike related challenges, all other activities & meetings have been cancelled for this week, including the Junior Discovery classes (which will be rescheduled).   We look forward to seeing you Sunday!  May God continue to bless you as you cope with hurricane recovery.

After Ike.... #

Damage in Angleton, though certainly present, is mild compared to our neighbors to the East.  Ike's last minute NE turn spared us a much worse scenario.   We are very grateful!   The church building has power and water and some church members have set up a shelter here for sleeping and cooking!  Mother Carol is trying to contact every parishioner to see what's needed.  If you don't hear from her, please call the church--you can leave a message--and let us know that you are okay.  Prayers continue!

Ike! #

Hurricane Ike draws ever nearer to Texas, and it looks like it is coming straight to us.   Angleton is now under mandatory evacuation orders.  Please follow the instructions of the Emergency Management Teams to keep yourself safe!

Holy Comforter's hurricane team will return to Angleton as soon as the storm abates to survey damage.  Call 979-549-7440 on Sunday if you have questions about the condition of your property.  If cell phones are working, we will do our best to answer your questions.

Holy Comforter Church and School are closed today, Thursday, and Friday, September 11 & 12.  We anticipate the likely cancellation of church services on Sunday, September 14; however, check back here for an update.

May the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus...even in the midst of Hurricane Ike!

Neither Red Nor Blue.... #

Selecting good leaders is critical at every level, even for the local parish!  At Holy Comforter, we will be electing new leaders on Sunday, October 19.  The vestry nominating committee has nominated a full slate of people who have agreed to serve if elected; see the list below.    We are grateful for their willingness to serve Holy Comforter Episcopal Church!

Additional nominations are being accepted as well.   "Expectations" forms for each leadership area are available in the Narthex.  For a nominee to be received, a signed "Expectations" form must be submitted to the church office by September 20. Photographs and bios of each nominee will be in the October newsletter so that we can be well prepared to vote on October 19.

The vestry nominating committee has nominated the following people:  For three 3 years terms: Chip Cole, Jerry Powell, and Lori Hawkins.  For one 1 year (uncompleted) term, Barbara Thomas.  For Diocesan Council delegate, Ed White; for Alternate, Mike Hattaway.   For one three year term on the Endowment Board: Ron Briscoe.    Watch for their information, along with any additional nominees, in the October newsletter!

Labor Day Sunday #

Sunday, August 31 is Labor Day Sunday, the perfect time to consider our labor.   Everyone is invited to bring a symbol of their work to place on the altar this Sunday, at either service, as we offer our work to God as a gift and ask God's blessing on our endeavors.

Back-to-school... #

It's that time again and, as always, Holy Comforter Episcopal Church wants to get our many educators (teachers, counselors, administration, staff, Sunday School teachers) off to a great start!  We will bless our educators at both services on Sunday, August 24.  Following the 10:30 service, we'll celebrate with water games for the children and a hot dog picnic for everybody!  Food & drinks are provided, just pack up your children's swimsuits and towel and join in the fun!  See you there!

Kudos to Holy Comforter Episcopal School! #

We are thrilled to announce that Holy Comforter Episcopal School has received its official Letter of Accreditation from the Southwestern Association of Episcopal Schools (SAES)!   The SAES process of accreditation is quite rigorous; only schools of excellence are able to receive this noteworthy acknowledgment.  Congratulations to our Head of School, Lori Logsdon, and her outstanding staff!

Green Church #

Like Kermit the frog sings:  it isn't easy being green!   But actually, it's not all that difficult either.  Holy Comforter is committed to improving our stewardship of God's creation! We are no longer buying styrofoam cups or plates; you may have noticed our eco-friendly sugar-cane plates and compostable hot/cold cups.

You can help us be better stewards by recycling; we have a recycle bin in the office, as well as two in the parish hall.   Check out our monthly Green Tip in the newsletter, and pick up one of the green shopping bags available courtesy of our Diocese.  If we each do our part, we can make a difference!
